Pain and Gain: the true story

If you are interested in true crime, criminal mayhem, or a tale of just how stupid and horrible people can be, I highly recommend the series of 3 long articles that start with this link.  It is the true story that inspired the current true crime comedy "Pain and Gain"  a fine film by Micheal Bay (no I am not being ironic, it is a good film and his best in years).

The article was especially interesting to me in how easy it was to believe.  To be sure the events are a bit bizarre, but the entire time I was reading it I found it very much jibed with my experiences with both police and criminals and people in general.  I've been regularly told that I am very cynical (usually by someone who wants something from me) and maybe it's true.  I consider myself a very jaded optimist, I believe that there really is a lot of good out there, I just have been really bad at finding it.
